Thursday 04/06/17 the Center for Families and Youth (North Facility) will host Yoga at 10:00 AM and the Fitness Loop at Houghton Park at 11:00 AM. CFY is located at 6335 Myrtle Ave. Long Beach, CA 90805.
Graciela Espinoza and the Prevention and Aftercare program hosts free weekly Yoga classes to the community and we will join them for Public Health Week. Yoga classes are led by the UpRising Yoga program. Please bring your own mat and water!
The half-mile Fitness Loop at Houghton Park has signs with fitness activity instructions. The Loop is a project of the North Long Beach HEAL Zone initiative. Please meet in front of the CFY office and join us for a great work out!
We hope you can join us for the yearly Public Health Week Hill Challenge, which is a brisk walk or lite run up the hill (on Hill Street).
Location: Meet us at the Main Health facility lawn at 3:30 PM.
Recommended Supplies: Water, Workout Gear, Sunscreen, and a Hat.
Here are 2 ways you can participate:
Option 1: Meet in the DOC (Room 201) at 12:00-12:30 pm (bring a yoga mat, if you’d like) we will be participating in a short mindfulness exercise leaving us feeling rejuvenated and present in the moment.
If you cannot attend:
Option 2: Take a moment at your desk, or wherever you are by giving yourself time and space to clear your mind by taking a few deep breaths as follows:
1. Inhale slowly, close your eyes and count 1…2…3…4
2. Exhale slowly, count 1…2…3…4
3. Repeat 4 times
4. Open your eyes
5. SMILE: The last step is the most crucial. Did you know that smiling, whether you want to or not can immediately change your mood? So cool!

Learn a little about Vic: He holds a Black Belt in Krav Maga and was certified to teach by Eyal Yanilov (Highest ranked Krav Maga Instructor in the world and highest student of Imi Lichtenfeld, founder of Krav Maga). Vic is a Senior Instructor at 360 Fight Academy, North America’s largest and most prestigious Krav Maga Academy, where he leads Kickboxing, Krav Maga, and is head of the Yoga Program. Vic currently leads yoga practices at 360 Fight Academy in Signal Hill as well as HAWT Yoga in Los Alamitos utilizing a vinyasa-style base that focuses on mobility and recovery. Vic is committed to helping students of all skill levels become empowered through a variety of physical expressions as a way to tap into their inner power.

Mark your calendars for the week of April 6-12, 2015 for another wonderful Public Health Week. This year’s theme is Healthiest Nation 2030, with public health seeking to make the US the healthiest nation in one generation — by 2030.
The Long Beach Health Department is pleased to announce an exciting lineup of activities and events to celebrate public health week and support staff, partners, and community members in taking steps each day for healthier lives. This year, crowd favorites including the Public Health Week Kick-Off, Funky Farm Fresh Friday, and Lunchtime Yoga return, along with new experiences – the QILT Cafe and an employee Health Fair. After the overwhelming success of 2014’s Public Health Week Conference, we will again be back at the Marriott Hotel for a bigger and better event than last year’s. And it wouldn’t be Public Health Week without the annual Hill Challenge!
